Situated 17 miles southeast of Fairbanks and
just three miles from North Pole, the Chena
Lake area sprawls across 2,000 acres of
diverse landscapes. From lush spruce,
tamarack, and birch forests to expansive
marshes and sloughs, it teems with wildlife.
Its centerpiece is a 260-acre lake,
accompanied by four meandering miles of
the Chena River. Witness the annual
spectacle of chum and king salmon
migrating nearly 1,000 miles from the Bering
Sea to spawn in July and August, easily
observed in the crystal-clear waters.
Adjacent to the recreation area lies the
Moose Creek Dike, a crucial seven-mile-long,
50-foot-high barrier safeguarding Fairbanks
from floods. Administered by the Army
Corps of Engineers, the area east of the dike
spans 20,000 acres, offering fertile wildlife
habitat. At the intersection of the dike and
the river stands the Moose Creek Dam,
providing panoramic views, a visitor
information kiosk, and a fish-viewing
overlook hosting the "salmon watch"
program during the summer months.
Delta Junction has worn numerous hats
throughout its history: from a bustling gold
rush hub to a haven for buffalo and a
strategic military outpost, evolving into a
thriving farming community. However, it's
most renowned today as the official terminus
of the Alaska Highway. Here, the iconic
highway converges with the Richardson
Highway, culminating the journey to
Fairbanks. This pivotal juncture, dubbed "The
Triangle," is marked by a prominent white
milepost denoting Mile 1422 of the Alaska
Highway. At this landmark spot sits the Delta
Junction Visitor Center, offering a warm
welcome to travelers with a cup of coffee
and a certificate commemorating their
completion of North America's ultimate road
trip
Alaska stands out as a premier destination for
witnessing the northern lights, also called the
Aurora Borealis – mesmerizing ribbons of
vibrant hues swirling across the nocturnal
canvas. Visitors flock from across the globe to
Alaska, drawn by this breathtaking spectacle
and the array of winter adventures it offers,
from exhilarating snowmobiling and the
timeless tradition of dog mushing to thrilling
skiing escapades and vibrant festivals and
sporting events. The prime window for
catching the northern lights in Alaska spans
from mid-August to mid-April, when longer
nights gift observers with the darkest, most
awe-inspiring skies. The glow of urban areas
can diminish the brilliance of aurora displays,
making it advisable to seek viewing spots
away from town centers, preferably in
locales renowned for their pristine,
unblemished skies. Although the northern
lights can grace the skies across Alaska, they
frequently adorn the heavens above the
Interior and Arctic regions. Notably, Fairbanks
emerges as a top choice for witnessing this
celestial spectacle, benefiting from its
strategic positioning, extended winter nights,
and vibrant auroral activity. (Click Here For
